Series

Al Daeya

In modern day affluent Cairo, a young, serious and strict Islamic preacher (Hany Salama) is in the process of becoming famous thanks to his TV show on a conservative religious channel.

Despite himself, he slowly falls in love with his beautiful neighbour (played by actress Basma) who is not only a professional musician but also holds very liberal views. She embodies the exact opposite of his conservative views, especially in arts and culture, and his developing love will bring into conflict what he preaches and what he feels, within the context of growing civil, political and religious unrest in Cairo.

Across the thirty episodes, Salama’s character will undergo a powerful transformation, from a very strict and inflexible man who forbids music being played at home to a moderate preacher who proclaims his love for the violinist Basma on live TV.

Written and recorded before the 30 June 2013 demonstrations and subsequent military ousting of the Muslim Brotherhood’s Mohamed Morsi from the presidency, the series is anchored in Egyptian recent history, with the character of the musician Basma openly opposing the rule of the Muslim Brotherhood and demonstrating against them.
